Nach dem Marienhospital (1859) und dem städtischen Krankenhaus (1865) nahm 1868 als dritter großer Neubau der medizinisch-sozialen Fürsorge die „Provinzial-Irrenanstalt“ auf dem Gertrudenberg in Osnabrück die ersten Patienten auf. Ein beeindruckender Gebäudekomplex, demgegenüber sich das Osnabrücker Schloss geradezu bescheiden ausnahm, thronte von nun an der Südostflanke des Gertrudenbergs. Die „Osnabrücker Zeitung“ war schon vor der Eröffnung überzeugt, „daß die neue Irrenanstalt zu den großartigsten und prächtigsten Bauten Osnabrücks wird gezählt werden müssen. After the Marienhospital (1859) and the municipal hospital (1865) took in 1868 as the third major new construction of medical-social care, the "provincial mental hospital" on the Gertrudenberg in Osnabrück the first patient. An impressive building complex, on the other hand, the Osnabrücker castle looked almost modest, enthroned from now on the southeast flank of the Gertrudenbergs. The "Osnabrücker Zeitung" was convinced even before the opening, "that the new asylum will be one of the greatest and most magnificent buildings in Osnabrück to be counted. The most useful is combined with the beautiful in such a perfect way that one would almost be tempted to envy the future inhabitants for their palatial abode.
