Im Frühjahr 1871 kommt es in Paris zum Aufstand der Arbeiterschaft und Soldaten der Nationalgarde gegen die konservative Regierung. Durch spontane Wahlen wird ein Pariser Stadtrat (Kommune) gebildet, deren Mitglieder (Kommunarden) die Umgestaltung Frankreichs in einen sozialistischen Bund souveräner Gemeinden gegen den Willen der Zentralregierung durchzusetzen versuchen. Nach blutigen Auseinandersetzungen gewinnen die Kommunarden schließlich die Kontrolle über Paris.

In the spring of 1871, the uprising of workers and soldiers of the National Guard against the conservative government took place in Paris. By spontaneous elections, a Paris city council (commune) is formed, whose members (communards) try to enforce the transformation of France into a socialist confederation of sovereign communities against the wishes of the central government. After bloody clashes, the Communards finally gain control of Paris.
