Universitätsplatz mit Löwengebäude
Die Aufnahme eröffnet den Blick aus dem 1. Obergeschoss des Rektoratsgebäudes, das zwischen 1872 und 1874 anstelle der nicht genehmigten
Seitenflügel des Hauptgebäudes der Universität entstand. In den Bildvordergrund ragt der Portikus des Melanchthonianums, welches 1902 anlässlich der 400-Jahrfeier der Gründung der Leucorea Wittenberg als Auditorien- und Seminargebäude errichtet wurde.
Das 2002 zum 500-jährigen Gründungsjubiläum der Universität eröffnete Hörsaalgebäude Audimax begrenzt den Campus nach Südosten. Das Audimax nimmt die Topografie des Uniplatzes in sich auf. Im Inneren wird durch die Treppenanlage eine höhengestaffelte Raumfolge erzielt, die dem terrassierten Campus mit seiner großen Freitreppe folgt. In der verglasten Gebäudefront spiegelt sich die Fassade des spätklassizistischen Hauptgebäudes, das 1832 – 1834 auf dem Areal des ehemaligen Franziskanerklosters nach Plänen von Ernst Friedrich Zwirner (1802 – 1861) und Wilhelm Heinrich Matthias errichtet wurde.
Im Jahre 1868 wurden zwei Löwenplastiken von Johann Gottfried Shadow (1764 – 1850) vor dem Gebäude aufgestellt. Diese flankieren das Hauptportal und geben dem Löwengebäude seinen Namen.

University square with the lion building
The photo opens a view from the 1st floor of the rectorate building, which was built between 1872 and 1874 instead of the unapproved one
Side wing of the main building of the university was built. In the foreground of the picture protrudes the portico of the Melanchthonianum, which was built in 1902 as an auditorium and seminar building on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Leucorea Wittenberg.
The Audimax lecture hall building, opened in 2002 for the 500th anniversary of the university's founding, borders the campus to the southeast. The Audimax takes up the topography of the university square. Inside, the staircase creates a height-graded sequence of rooms that follows the terraced campus with its large open staircase. The facade of the late Classicist main building is reflected in the glazed front of the building, which was built between 1832 and 1834 on the site of the former Franciscan monastery according to plans by Ernst Friedrich Zwirner (1802 - 1861) and Wilhelm Heinrich Matthias.
In 1868 two lion sculptures by Johann Gottfried Shadow (1764 - 1850) were placed in front of the building. These flank the main portal and give the lion building its name.
