Das ehemalige Hauptpostamt ist eines der größten und beeindruckendsten Gründerzeitgebäude der Stadt Halle. Der neoromanische Baublock, erbaut 1892 bis 1898, reicht vom Joliot-Curie-Platz mehr als 100 Meter weit gen Süden und wurde als Dreiflügelanlage an der damaligen Promenade konzipiert. Entworfen wurde die Oberpostdirektion zwar vom Post-Baurat Neumann, doch als eigentlicher Architekt gilt der Post-Baurat Klauwell, der dafür im Jahr der Fertigstellung den Roten Adlerorden IV. Klasse erhielt.

The former main post office is one of the largest and most impressive Wilhelminian-style buildings in Halle. The neo-Romanesque building block, built between 1892 and 1898, extends from Joliot-Curie-Platz more than 100 meters to the south and was designed as a three-wing complex on the then promenade. The Oberpostdirektion was designed by the post office building officer Neumann, but the actual architect is the post building officer Klauwell, who received the Red Eagle Order IV class in the year of completion.
