Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina – Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften, kurz auch (Academia) Leopoldina, ist die älteste naturwissenschaftlich-medizinische Gelehrtengesellschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum und die älteste dauerhaft existierende naturforschende Akademie der Welt.
Die später nach Kaiser Leopold I. benannte Einrichtung wurde 1652 von Johann Laurentius Bausch als Academia Naturae Curiosorum (auch Academia Imperialis Leopoldina Naturae Curiosorum genannt) in Schweinfurt gegründet und hat heute den Rechtsstatus eines eingetragenen Vereins.
Die heute in Halle an der Saale ansässige Akademie wurde am 14. Juli 2008 zur Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften ernannt. Rechtsgrundlage war der Beschluss der Gemeinsamen Wissenschaftskonferenz des Bundes und der Länder vom 18. Februar 2008. Seitdem steht die Leopoldina unter der Schirmherrschaft des Bundespräsidenten. Sie ist unabhängig und dem Gemeinwohl verpflichtet. Idee bei der Gründung einer Nationalakademie war die Schaffung einer legitimierten Institution, die unabhängig von wirtschaftlichen oder politischen Interessen wichtige gesellschaftliche Zukunftsthemen wissenschaftlich bearbeitet, die Ergebnisse der Politik und der Öffentlichkeit vermittelt und diese Themen national wie international vertritt.

The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences, or Academia Leopoldina for short, is the oldest scientific and medical scholarly society in German-speaking countries and the oldest permanent natural research academy in the world.
The institution, later named after Emperor Leopold I, was founded in 1652 by Johann Laurentius Bausch as Academia Naturae Curiosorum (also called Academia Imperialis Leopoldina Naturae Curiosorum) in Schweinfurt and today has the legal status of a registered association.
The academy, located in Halle an der Saale today, was named the National Academy of Sciences on July 14, 2008. The legal basis was the resolution of the Joint Science Conference of the Federation and the Länder on February 18, 2008. Since then, the Leopoldina has been under the patronage of the Federal President. It is independent and committed to the common good. The idea behind the establishment of a national academy was the creation of a legitimized institution which, independently of economic or political interests, works scientifically on important future social issues, communicates the results of politics and the public and represents these issues nationally and internationally.
