The Porte Prison ("prison gate") in Vannes dates from the 13th to 15th centuries. The name comes from the gate's use as a prison between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The south tower was largely destroyed in 1886. In the 1970s and 80s the roof and tower were restored.
As the old photo compared to the new photo shows, half-timbered houses were out of fashion for a long time, but are now welcome again in the cityscape. It is possible that the original structures were exposed or restored.
Vannes is a tourist attraction for its medieval ambience and well-preserved city walls.
