The "Neue Markt" (New Market) in the Inner City is one of the oldest squares in Vienna. In the middle is the Donnerbrunnen, originally from 1739. The figures represent the four most important tributaries of the Danube in Austria. They were replaced by copies in 1873. The fountain itself was removed during the Second World War; most recently it was temporarily removed during the construction of an underground car park from 2018 to 2022 (these replacements may also explain the not quite perfect alignment).

The small houses in the background, on the north side of the square, were demolished in 1899 and replaced by the so-called "Herrnhuterhaus". This takes its name from a canvas shop "Zum Herrnhuter" in a previous building (in turn named after the Protestant brotherhood of Herrnhut in Silesia). Today it houses a guest house and shops.
