Die Zitadelle Petersberg (auch Festung Petersberg) ist eine ursprünglich kurmainzische, später preußische Stadtfestung des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, die im Zentrum der thüringischen Landeshauptstadt Erfurt liegt.
Sie gilt als eine der größten und besterhaltenen ihrer Art in ganz Europa und wurde 1665 auf Befehl des kurmainzischen Kurfürsten und Erzbischofs Johann Philipp von Schönborn als Zwingburg gegen die Stadt im neuitalienischen Stil errichtet. Im weiteren Verlauf sollte sie als nördlichste Festung das Kurfürstentum vor Angriffen der protestantischen Mächte schützen. Die strategische Bedeutung der Zitadelle erkannten später auch die Franzosen und die Preußen, die sie Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts für kurze Zeit besetzten. Mit dem Wiener Kongress im Jahre 1815 kam sie mit Erfurt zum preußischen Königreich und wurde bis zur deutschen Reichsgründung 1871 als Befestigungsanlage genutzt. The Citadel Petersberg (also fortress Petersberg) is an originally Kurmainzische, later Prussian city fortress of the 17th to 19th centuries, which is located in the center of the Thuringian capital Erfurt.
It is considered one of the largest and best preserved of its kind in Europe and was built in 1665 on the orders of the Electoral Archbishop Elector and Archbishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn as a fortress against the city in the neo-Italian style. Later, as the northernmost fortress, it was intended to protect the electorate from attacks by the Protestant powers. The strategic importance of the citadel later recognized the French and the Prussians, who occupied it for a short time in the early 19th century. With the Congress of Vienna in 1815 she came with Erfurt to the Prussian Kingdom and was used until the German founding in 1871 as a fortification.
