St. Germain-des-Près is one of the oldest churches of Paris. While the once mighty abbey was built in the 6th century under the Merovingian king Childebert I, the present building dates back to the 11th to 17th century. The same-named quarter is regarded as the intellectual center of Paris: On the square in front of the church lived Sartre and Picasso, and the cafes were favorite meeting places for artists, writers and philosophers, such as the French existentialists in the mid-20th century. The area today is one of the favorite places of tourists.
