New rice paddies are created in Ubud, Indonesia. The first image shows the new fields after the first step of preparation. A small machine, pushed by a man, roughly digged the soil over. The second image shows the next step: the fields are turned over again and then flooded with water to improve the rice plants' ability to compete against weeds for nutrients and sunlight.

The word "paddy" is derived from the Malay word "padi", meaning rice plant.
