Since the very beginning, the life of Kyiv revolved around the Pochaina river, whose lower reach served as a convenient harbor. Over time, natural and anthropogenic factors led to the merging of the Pochaina's mouth with the Dnieper. The new harbor designed by Nikolai Maksimovich was constructed in 1897-1899 in a shallowed bay that once was the Pochaina's middle reach.
