Since its earliest days, Kyiv’s life revolved around the Pochaina river, whose lower reaches served as a convenient harbor. Over time, natural and human-induced factors caused the Pochaina’s mouth to merge with the Dnieper. The new harbor, designed by Nikolai Maksimovich, was constructed between 1897 and 1899 in a shallow bay that had once been the Pochaina’s middle reach. One of the natural factors mentioned—the Dnieper’s seasonal flooding—is visible in the photo.

Very interesting, that's quite some flooding! Thanks for sharing.
