The Marianum high school goes back to the school of a Dominican monastery of the 13th century. It was founded in 1628 as a higher urban school after a donation by the Mainz canon H. Thönen. In 1824 the monastery was dissolved by the Kingdom of Prussia and the school was converted into a royal grammar school; In 1874 it finally became a high school.
