Der heute als Alter Markt bezeichnete Platz liegt südlich des Marktplatzes und war einer der ersten Siedlungskerne der Stadt Halle (Saale). Ab dem 11. Jahrhundert bestand an dieser Stelle eine Fernhändlersiedlung, die um 1100 über eine Befestigung verfügte. Am Alten Markt stand das erste hallische Rathaus und, mit der heute nicht mehr vorhandenen Michaeliskapelle, die erste Pfarrkirche der Stadt.

The square, now known as the Alter Markt, is located south of the market square and was one of the first settlement centers in the city of Halle (Saale). From the 11th century there was a long-distance traders' settlement at this point, which had a fortification around 1100. Hall's first town hall stood on the Alter Markt and, with the Michaelis Chapel no longer in existence, it was the city's first parish church.
