À l'emplacement de cette avenue se dressait jadis le rempart médiéval, bordé d'un des fossés entourant la ville de Metz. Début 1900, les remparts furent détruits. Seul témoin demeurant, la tour du Champ à Panne, dite tour Camoufle. Elle porte le surnom de Jacob de Castel, dit Camoufle, un artilleur réputé du 15e siècle. Elle fut construite vers 1437. La tour Camoufle, édifiée sur les fortifications du 13e siècle, à l’emplacement d’une ancienne tour gallo-romaine, reste un des derniers vestiges des fortifications médiévales.
On the site of this avenue once stood the medieval rampart, bordered by one of the ditches surrounding the city of Metz. At the beginning of 1900, the ramparts were destroyed. The only remaining witness is the Champ à Panne tower, known as the Camoufle tower. It bears the nickname of Jacob de Castel, known as Camoufle, a renowned artilleryman of the 15th century. It was built around 1437. The Camoufle tower, built on the 13th century fortifications, on the site of an old Gallo-Roman tower, remains one of the last vestiges of the medieval fortifications.
