The Spiegelrei is a watercourse in the center of Bruges. It runs from Jan von Eyck Square (Jan van Eyckplein) to Langerei. The name derives from "Speghele", which means something like "elongated water". In the center of the picture is Jan von Eyck Square with a statue in honor of the painter of the same name who lived here. In the Middle Ages, this was one of the largest trading hubs in Europe. Traders from many different countries met here, and a tangle of people was busy loading and unloading goods. Today it is much quieter here, even the crowds of tourists tend to concentrate around the blocks around the market square.
