View of the New Castle in Vienna from Heldenplatz. It was built between 1881 and 1913 as the youngest part of the Hofburg.
At the time of the old photo, the Prince Eugene monument was walled in to protect it from bombs. The Nazis used the castle as an exhibition space for propaganda and stolen works of art. At the entrance you can see that an exhibition was running from autumn 1942 to spring 1943.
Today, the New Castle houses reading rooms and several museums, including the House of Austrian History and the World Museum.
