1889 opened in Montmartre with the Moulin Rouge the most famous variety theater in the world. The red mill on the roof of the building recalls the history of the district, as in the 18th century Montmartre was only a small village on a hill with several mills (of which today exist only two).
With its spectacular shows and famous dancers, the Moulin Rouge celebrated huge success and attracted people from all walks of. The advertising posters of the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec contributed to this.
Although the popularity of nightclubs undiminished until today, the surrounding neighborhood has lost much of its former charm and is best known as debauched red-light district.
1889 ouvre à Montmartre avec le Moulin Rouge le théâtre de variétés le plus connu au monde. Le moulin rouge sur le toit de l'édifice rappelle l'histoire du quartier, car au 18ème siècle Montmartre n'était qu'un petit village sur une colline avec plusieurs moulins (dont il n'en existe aujourd'hui que deux).
Avec ses spectacles spectaculaires et ses danseurs célèbres, le Moulin Rouge a célébré un énorme succès et a attiré des gens de tous horizons. Les affiches publicitaires de l'artiste Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec y ont contribué.
Bien que la popularité des boîtes de nuit n'ait pas diminué jusqu'à aujourd'hui, le quartier environnant a perdu une grande partie de son charme d'antan et est surtout connu sous le nom de quartier rouge débauché.
