View on the Antwerp Suikerrui from the Steenplein, around 1900 and in 2018. The Suikerrui is a street in the old center of the city which connects the Grote Markt with the eastern shore of the Scheldt.
At the time there was still driving the tram; nowaday the street is resered for pedestrians.
Antwerp is one of the few central European cities with a largely preserved historical center. Many buildings from the heyday of the city can still be admired today. Outstanding is the Cathedral of Our Lady, whose gigantic tower is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The building on the left is a former shipping company; today the building in neo-Italian Renaissance style houses a museum about the Antwerp painter Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930).
In the house on the right was then as today a café.
Vue sur le Suikerrui d'Anvers depuis la Steenplein, vers 1900 et en 2018. La rue Suikerrui est une rue du vieux centre de la ville qui relie la Grand-Place à la côte est de l'Escaut.
À l'époque, le tramway était encore en circulation; De nos jours, la rue est réservée aux piétons.
Anvers est l’une des rares villes d’Europe centrale à posséder un centre historique en grande partie préservé. De nombreux bâtiments datant de l'apogée de la ville peuvent encore être admirés aujourd'hui. La cathédrale Notre-Dame, dont la tour gigantesque est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, est remarquable.
Le bâtiment à gauche est une ancienne compagnie de navigation. aujourd'hui, le bâtiment de style néo-italien renaissance abrite un musée sur le peintre anversois Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930).
Dans la maison de droite se trouvait alors comme aujourd'hui un café.
