On 10 September 1943, Porta San Paolo was the scene of the last attempt by the Italian army to avoid the German occupation of Rome
On the evening of the 9th, the 21st Infantry Division "Granatieri di Sardegna" moved towards the centre, engaging in fierce fighting on the Via Laurentina (Tre Fontane locality), around the Exposition Hill (current EUR district) and Forte Ostiense . The German troops marched on the Via Ostiense, towards the heart of Rome.
Despite the overwhelming numerical superiority and armament of the enemy, the walls of Porta San Paolo became a defensive bulwark of resistance, protected by barricades and vehicle carcasses. The grenadiers also fought here with courage, along with the numerous civilians.
Le 10 septembre 1943, Porta San Paolo fut le théâtre de la dernière tentative de l'armée italienne d'éviter l'occupation allemande de Rome.
Le soir du 9, la 21e division d'infanterie "Granatieri di Sardegna" se dirigea vers le centre et s'engagea dans de violents combats sur la Via Laurentina (localité de Tre Fontane), autour de l'Exposition Hill (district actuel de l'EUR) et du Fort Ostiense. Les troupes allemandes ont marché sur la Via Ostiense, en direction du coeur de Rome.
Malgré la supériorité numérique et l'armement écrasant de l'ennemi, les murs de Porta San Paolo devinrent un rempart de défense défensif, protégé par des barricades et des carcasses de véhicules. Les grenadiers ont également combattu ici avec courage, aux côtés de nombreux civils.
