Sentinel Building at the intersection of Columbus Ave and Kearny Street in San Francisco's Chinatown District. It was completed in 1907, slowed by the 1906 earthquake. It was originally used as the headquarters of Abe Ruef, an influential politician of the city. From 1950, the basement was used as the "hungry i" nightclub, which served numerous well-known musicians and comedians as a stage and which had a major influence on stand-up comedy. It was later renamed "Columbus Tower" and temporarily used as the headquarters by the band "The Kingston Trio". It then became sold it to film director Francis Ford Coppola, who renovated it and named it back to "Sentinel Building". Today the building has different users; much of it is used by the American Zoetrope film studio, which Zoetrope founded with George Lucas.
To the right stood (as still today) the "International Hotel" and a courthouse (today part of City College). Part of the "Montgomery Block" can be seen on the far left. It was San Francisco's first fire and earthquake resistant building and served as the headquarters for many famous lawyers, bankers, writers, actors and artists. It was demolished in 1959 and replaced by the Transamerica Pyramid in 1972, part of which can be seen in the new photo.

Sentinel Building à l'intersection de Columbus Ave et Kearny Street dans le quartier chinois de San Francisco. Il fut achevé en 1907, ralenti par le tremblement de terre de 1906. Il était à l'origine utilisé comme siège d'Abe Ruef, un politicien influent de la ville. À partir de 1950, le sous-sol a été utilisé comme boîte de nuit "Hungry i", qui a servi de scène à de nombreux musiciens et comédiens bien connus et qui a eu une influence majeure sur la comédie stand-up. Il a ensuite été rebaptisé "Columbus Tower" et temporairement utilisé comme quartier général par le groupe "The Kingston Trio". Il a ensuite été vendu au réalisateur Francis Ford Coppola, qui l'a rénové et l'a rebaptisé "Sentinel Building". Aujourd'hui, le bâtiment a différents utilisateurs ; une grande partie est utilisée par le studio de cinéma américain Zoetrope, que Zoetrope a fondé avec George Lucas.
À droite se trouvaient (comme encore aujourd'hui) "l'hôtel international" et un palais de justice (qui fait aujourd'hui partie du City College). Une partie du "Montgomery Block" est visible à l'extrême gauche. C'était le premier bâtiment résistant aux incendies et aux tremblements de terre de San Francisco et a servi de siège à de nombreux avocats, banquiers, écrivains, acteurs et artistes célèbres. Il a été démoli en 1959 et remplacé par la Transamerica Pyramid en 1972, dont une partie est visible sur la nouvelle photo.
