In 1899, during the British colonial administration, the building that is now the City Gallery, was constructed to replace the Government Printing Office in Taiping. Kuala Lumpur had just been nominated as the capital of the Federated Malay States and the administrative needs required a Printing Office close by.
Like the former Railway Offices (today the Textile Museum), it was designed by the British architect Arthur Charles Norman, based on neo-Renaissance principles (exposed bricks, plastered columns, and large semi-circular windows). In the 1940s, canopy roofs were added above the first floor windows to protect against the tropical sun.
The buildings function then changed several times in the following years. In 1961 (following Malaysia's independence), it became the Ministry of Labour; in 1977, it was converted to the Metropolitan Postal Security Office and in 1986, it became the first public library of KL. In 2004 a new annex was added. Today, the building hosts the City Gallery, a admission free museum.
En 1899, pendant l’administration coloniale britannique, le bâtiment, qui est maintenant la galerie municipale, a été construit pour remplacer l’imprimerie gouvernementale de Taiping. Kuala Lumpur venait d'être nommée capitale des États fédérés malais et les besoins administratifs nécessitaient la présence d'une imprimerie à proximité.
A l'instar des anciens bureaux des chemins de fer (aujourd'hui le Textile Museum), il a été conçu par l'architecte britannique Arthur Charles Norman, sur la base des principes néo-Renaissance (briques apparentes, colonnes en plâtre et grandes fenêtres en plein cintre). Dans les années 1940, des toits à baldaquin ont été ajoutés au-dessus des fenêtres du premier étage pour se protéger du soleil tropical.
La fonction des bâtiments a ensuite changé plusieurs fois au cours des années suivantes. En 1961 (après l'indépendance de la Malaisie), il devint le ministère du Travail; en 1977, elle a été convertie en bureau de sécurité postale métropolitain et en 1986, elle est devenue la première bibliothèque publique de KL. En 2004, une nouvelle annexe a été ajoutée. Aujourd'hui, le bâtiment abrite la City Gallery, un musée gratuit.
